Block List or Block Grid? Choosing your editor experience

How we decide which Umbraco editing model gives content teams freedom without breaking the design.

Umbraco
List / Grid

Umbraco offers two main ways for editors to build pages from components: the Block List and the Block Grid. Both let editors add, reorder and edit content blocks. The difference is layout.

Block List: one column of blocks

Blocks stack one after another. Editors choose what goes on the page and in what order, and the design controls how each block looks. It's simple to learn and hard to break.

Block Grid: blocks in a layout

Blocks can sit side by side in columns and areas, and editors can resize them within rules we set. It's more flexible and closer to a page builder, which suits marketing teams who create lots of landing pages.

How we choose

Block ListContent-led sites, consistent templates, larger editor teams, or where brand control matters most.
Block GridCampaign and landing pages, small expert teams, and layouts that genuinely need columns.
BothBlock Grid on landing pages, Block List on articles and standard pages.

Guardrails make the difference

Whichever we pick, we limit which blocks are allowed where, give each block clear labels and previews in the back office, and test every layout on mobile. Editors get freedom where it helps and structure where it protects the design.

The best editor experience is one your team can use on a Friday afternoon without calling us.
