AEO: getting cited by ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity

People ask assistants now, not just search engines. Structured content decides who gets quoted.

AI
Be the answer.

More people now ask an AI assistant instead of typing into a search box. The assistant reads the web, answers in its own words and often links to a few sources. Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the work of making your site one of the sources it trusts and cites.

What assistants look for

Clear answersPages that answer a specific question directly, near the top.
StructureProper headings, lists and tables that are easy to extract.
SchemaStructured data stating what a page is: an organisation, service, article or product.
AuthorityNamed authors, dates, and links from other reputable sites.

Your CMS matters more than ever

Assistants work best with clean, consistent content. In Umbraco we model content as fields rather than one big text box: a service has a summary and FAQs, an article has an author and a date. That makes it simple to output accurate schema on every page automatically.

Practical steps

Start with the questions your customers actually ask. Give each one a page or section with a direct answer, followed by supporting detail. Add organisation and FAQ schema, make sure pages don't rely on scripts to show their content, and keep facts such as prices and opening hours current.

Good SEO and good AEO come from the same thing: clear, structured, trustworthy content.

We build structured data and content modelling into every Umbraco site. If you'd like a review of how AI assistants see your site, get in touch.
